A risky tasting menu at Mugaritz

Andoni Luis Aduriz’s restaurant Mugaritz is one of the big restaurants of the San Sebastian cuisine. Located in Rentería -the town is about 8 kilometers away from San Sebastian- the restaurant has two Michelin stars and, furthermore, lots of recognitions of the highest level. Instead of providing too much data about the procedures, philosophy or the stuff handled, the best recommendation would be watch the documentary Campo a través, a nice mentally training for the avalanche of feelings awaiting there. The premise is clear: this is not for faint-hearted. Working with great partners such as AZTI-Tecnalia (Technological Center specialized in marine and food research) there’s a certain dose of lab…

LABe open its doors at Tabakalera

    Espacio LABe

What does the future taste like? Last Monday LABe -partnered and managed by the Basque Culinary Center– started its activity in the top roof of the Tabakalera Center. LABe is probably a suitable word game resulting from labe -oven in basque- and lab. As they say, is much more than just an experimental restaurant, but a coworking space and a place where determine -we don’t know yet all the details- the gastronomy of the future in digital terms. So far we can visit the restaurant at lunch hour and ask for plate of the day from Monday to Friday or the daily menu for € 18 during the whole week.…

Nice pintxos in the city center at Zazpi bar

    Terraza Zazpi Donosti

The Zazpi bar is well located in the pedestrian San Marcial street. It’s a bar daily frequented by workers from the sorrounding area and, lately, also by people scaping from the massified Parte Vieja. Its interior may seem not very glamorous, but don’t trust in appearances, this bar has a fabulous kitchen which worths to be visited. The offer in pintxos is… pure luxury, haute cuisine in a small size format. The staff also seems to be motivated and has knowledge about the product list or possible recommendations about wines. In short, it’s a place where invest wisely the budget when going out on a pintxos tour. Friendly prices in the…

    Inside the Basque Culinary Center

Opened in 2011, the BCC is an important reference in Europe regarding gastronomy. Prior reservation -and only in their website- is required, from Monday to Friday and during the academic year (September- June): Dish of the day (on the 4th floor restaurant): Prepared by students of the first year of the degree – always supervised by their teachers – this option includes a main…

Basque Country meets Mexico at Gatxupa

    Pintxo y margarita

In the last years we are living in our city the opening of middle-class restaurants bearing the name of big chefs. It’s possibly a way to be even more loaded diversify their businesses. This phenomenon offers to ordinary citizens the oportunity to be somewhere lookalike the stars, whether Michelin or not. Oh, this humility moves us… One of these cases has been Gatxupa, inaugurated a few months ago by chef Bruno Oteiza -born and fed in Donostia but become a seasoned pro after travelling around half the world- who, at his return to San Sebastian, has decided that we needed another restaurant basque-mexican fusion. Will it have our approval?  It’s Saturday…

    Pintxo tour at Casa Vergara

Located next to Santa María’s church, in the heart of the pintxo’s golden mile, Casa Vergara reopens its doors with new owners and a new identity. With a nice decoration and a renewed impetus, the place is ideal to have a drink with a pintxo, either going on a pintxos route or before lunch or dinner, as an aperitif. The offer focuses around cod, main star at our ports and flagship of our typical cuisine, so we can find it cooked in multiple ways. Quality is… let’s say medium range, but prices tend to high range… get your own conclusions. Tip: Better choose those optimal detected pintxos or ask for…

Chile meets Donostia at El Bombín

    el bombin reyes catolicos

Reyes Católicos shines again after a while being overshadowed by the hipsterhood of Gros. But this pedestrian area full of terraces is still a good idea to spend a good time drinking or eating something in a quieter ambiance, far from the masses. As the bar is run by people from Valparaíso, you can add to your drink some typical Chilean food. Pisco is always available but piscosour only under request. Fridays and Saturdays offers theme Nikkei dinners -Japanese with Peruvian influences- so, fun is guaranteed. Easy recipes but tasty, made with lot of care and, something hard to find in our city, served with a smile, that luxury item…

India and Middle East at Chutney Gastrobar

    chutney

NEW UPDATE (February 2020): Reopened and working as usual, great! UPDATE: Non operative since August 2019. Their Facebook profile announces a possibly delivery food service in the future. Sad closing. In Amara, more precisely close to Plaza Easo, we can find this small but recommendable place. The staff masters several cuisines – also several languages including English – so you can transport yourself at a snap to desert or monsoon places, or, at least, to somewhere more exotic than usual. The formula is simple: after being accommodated – you’ll rarely get the VIP table but don’t worry, the bar is quite comfortable- they will kindly explain you the menu and dish…

Craft beers at Baga Biga Faktoria

The craft beer boom had to lead later or sooner in the opening of specialized places where to taste them. Baga Biga Faktoria has just opened in April 2019 and offers a wide selection of tap craft beers, packaged as well. By June, their own beer, called Baga Biga -of course!- will be ready to go. If you find a table available, there’s also a small menu with eight simple options prepared right there at the kitchen. The price range is wide but tends to expensive -obviously, comparing with alcohol average prices in Spain-: small size (0,20l from €2) up to an special and imported 0,75l that rounds €14. However, you’ll have…

Wines and something else at n.06 store, bar & restaurant

    n06 San Sebastián

A nice option in the city center to enjoy an special wine. Two options available: stay at the bar having a drink with some cold assortments or going into the inside restaurant for lunch or dinner with a quite more sophisticated menu. Suitable for an aperitif, possibly a bit more expensive than others, but quality here is remarkable. Before leaving, some basque products for sybarites and a fine wine selection are available for sale.
